The latest figures released by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) and the Global Wellness Summit (GWS) reveal that Asia’s wellness tourism market expanded by an impressive 31% during 2024, reaching a value of US$215 billion. This Thailand Wellness News report highlights how governments, investors, healthcare providers, hospitality groups, and property developers are increasingly turning their attention towards Asia as demand for wellness travel, medical services, and preventive healthcare continues to accelerate across the region.

Global Wellness Economy Nears Seven Trillion Dollars

The wellness economy has grown into one of the world’s most influential industries, reaching an estimated US$6.8 trillion in 2024 after expanding by approximately 35% since 2019. Industry analysts project the sector will continue growing at an annual compound rate of 7.6%, potentially reaching US$9.75 trillion by 2029.

Today, wellness extends well beyond luxury spas and high-end resorts. It encompasses preventive healthcare, medical tourism, nutrition, fitness, mental wellbeing, wellness real estate, complementary medicine, and sustainable lifestyle practices. The sector now accounts for a substantial share of global health-related spending and continues attracting investment from both public and private sectors.

Asia Emerges as the World’s Wellness Powerhouse

Asia has become the driving force behind the industry’s expansion, with the region’s overall wellness economy growing to US$2.03 trillion in 2024, representing an increase of 74% compared with pre-pandemic levels.

The continent now leads globally in several major wellness categories, including traditional and complementary medicine, wellness real estate, healthy eating and nutrition, and thermal and mineral springs.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, four of the world’s five fastest-growing wellness tourism markets are now located in Asia. India leads with annual growth of 57%, followed by Thailand and South Korea at 36% each, while China recorded growth of 35%.

Perhaps even more significantly, Asia has now surpassed Europe in the number of wellness tourism trips. During 2024, Asia recorded approximately 563 million wellness journeys, compared with Europe’s 348 million, confirming the region’s position as the world’s leading wellness travel market.

Thailand Records Exceptional Growth

Thailand continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the world’s premier wellness destinations.

The country’s wellness tourism market expanded by 36%, making it one of the fastest-growing markets globally. Thailand’s overall wellness economy reached approximately US$43 billion during 2024, placing it 24th worldwide while ranking among the fastest-growing wellness economies internationally.

Its wellness travel sector generated more than US$14 billion, while strong performances were also recorded in wellness real estate and spa services, both of which continue attracting domestic and international investment.

Industry observers say Thailand’s success stems from its unique ability to combine internationally respected healthcare services with traditional healing practices, luxury hospitality, natural attractions, and growing expertise in preventive medicine.

Global Wellness Summit Heads to Phuket

Thailand’s international standing has been further reinforced by its selection as host of the 20th anniversary Global Wellness Summit, which will be held at Angsana Laguna Phuket from November 10 to 13, 2026.

The prestigious gathering will bring together senior executives, physicians, academics, investors, researchers, architects, technology innovators, and policymakers from around the world to discuss the future direction of the wellness industry.

Hosting the summit provides Thailand with an opportunity to showcase its growing leadership in medical wellness, preventive healthcare, sustainable tourism, and wellness innovation.

Government Sees Wellness as National Opportunity

Thailand’s Minister of Public Health, Patana Promphat, said the summit reflects the country’s long-term commitment to becoming one of the world’s leading wellness destinations.

He noted that the event’s theme, The Science, Art and Soul of Wellness, mirrors Thailand’s centuries-old philosophy of connecting physical health, mental wellbeing, spirituality, community, and nature. The minister said hosting the summit reinforces Thailand’s determination to help shape the future of global wellness while strengthening international cooperation across the sector.

Science and Longevity Take Centre Stage

A major focus of this year’s summit will be the growing relationship between clinical medicine and consumer wellness.

Leading experts will explore how precision medicine and longevity science are shifting healthcare away from treating disease after it develops and toward helping people remain healthier throughout their lives.

Internationally recognized geroscientist Dr. Andrea Maier is expected to discuss advances in age-related research and personalized medicine, while Blue Zones founder Dan Buettner will examine how community, lifestyle, movement, and cultural habits contribute to longer and healthier lives.

Other sessions will focus on hormone optimization, women’s health, preventive clinical care, and scientific innovations designed to improve long-term health outcomes.

Latest Global Data to Be Unveiled

The summit will also feature the official release of the latest Global Wellness Economy Monitor from the Global Wellness Institute.

The report will provide updated international data covering regional performance, sector growth, investment trends, and future forecasts, giving governments, healthcare organizations, investors, and businesses valuable insights into one of the world’s fastest-expanding industries.

Designing Healthier Cities and Communities

Beyond medicine and tourism, the summit will explore how architecture and design can positively influence health and wellbeing.

One of the headline initiatives will be the launch of the Intentional Spaces Design Challenge, developed in partnership with Johns Hopkins University and Aldar Properties.

The competition encourages architects, designers, and urban planners to apply principles of neuroaesthetics when designing residential developments, commercial buildings, and public spaces that promote better mental and physical health.

Research from Johns Hopkins University continues to demonstrate that art, music, architecture, and thoughtfully designed environments can measurably reduce stress, improve emotional wellbeing, and enhance overall quality of life.

Innovation Meets Ancient Traditions

Business leaders attending the summit will examine how hospitality, wellness, and lifestyle brands are reshaping customer experiences through innovation, sustainability, and cultural authenticity.

Discussions will focus on changing consumer expectations, environmental responsibility, wellness retail, and the future of health-focused travel.

Thailand’s own cultural heritage will remain central to the event, with delegates experiencing traditional wellness practices, spiritual rituals, silk craftsmanship, and cultural performances, including a special appearance by the award-winning Buddhist Chanting Team from Dhammajarinee Witthaya School.

Organizers believe these experiences demonstrate that cultural heritage remains an essential component of modern wellness.

Thailand Positioned for Long-Term Leadership

The remarkable expansion of the global wellness economy demonstrates that health and wellbeing have become powerful economic drivers shaping tourism, healthcare, real estate, urban development, and consumer lifestyles worldwide.

Thailand’s ability to combine internationally recognized healthcare services, world-class hospitality, traditional healing wisdom, natural resources, and supportive government policies has created a strong competitive advantage within this rapidly expanding market. Hosting the 20th anniversary Global Wellness Summit further elevates the country’s international profile while providing an important platform to attract investment, strengthen partnerships, and accelerate innovation across the wellness sector. As Asia continues leading global wellness growth and Thailand records one of the world’s strongest annual increases in wellness tourism, the nation appears exceptionally well positioned to capitalize on rising global demand for preventive healthcare, longevity science, sustainable travel, and holistic wellbeing. The momentum now building across the industry suggests Thailand is not simply participating in the global wellness revolution but is steadily establishing itself as one of its most influential leaders for years to come.
