Indonesia is making a strong move to attract South Korean investors into its thriving wellness tourism sector, positioning itself as a global hub for sustainable and transformative travel experiences. According to Wardhana, Indonesia’s wellness industry is evolving beyond spa retreats and herbal remedies to offer deeply rooted cultural experiences that appeal to the modern traveler’s pursuit of health, balance, and authenticity. In this Asia Wellness News report, it is highlighted that South Korea’s reputation for innovation and sustainable tourism complements Indonesia’s heritage-based offerings, setting the stage for long-term partnership and shared prosperity in the wellness economy.
Rising Global Demand for Wellness Experiences
Global data from the Global Wellness Institute reveals that the wellness economy reached a staggering US$6.32 trillion in 2023 and is projected to grow to nearly US$10 trillion by 2029, at a CAGR of 7.44 percent. Within this rapidly expanding market, Indonesia ranks sixth in the Asia-Pacific region and holds the third-highest growth rate, reflecting its rising appeal as a destination for rejuvenation and holistic healing.
Minister Wardhana also noted that travelers worldwide are increasingly willing to spend more on meaningful, health-centered, and transformative experiences—areas where Indonesia has a distinct advantage due to its cultural diversity and UNESCO-recognized traditions.
Expanding Destinations and Investment Opportunities
Bali continues to dominate Indonesia’s wellness landscape, with over 23 percent of visitors citing wellness as their main reason for travel. However, new destinations such as Yogyakarta, Solo, and Sumba are emerging as rising stars in wellness tourism, offering authentic Javanese healing rituals, Balinese spa therapies, and eco-conscious retreats.
Wardhana also encouraged South Korean investors to explore opportunities in ecotourism, marine biodiversity, culture, and healthcare. Special focus was given to Indonesia’s ten priority tourism destinations and the Sanur Special Economic Zone (KEK) in Bali, envisioned as a leading center for premium medical and healthcare tourism.
Indonesia’s effort to merge culture, sustainability, and healthcare tourism reflects a strategic vision to become Asia’s next wellness powerhouse. With international partnerships and investor confidence growing, the nation is poised to redefine holistic travel across the region, bringing balance, sustainability, and vitality to the forefront of modern tourism.
