A new study by researchers from Fujian Normal University has identified six phytochemicals in Tremella fuciformis and examined their biological activities across areas associated with metabolic balance, cognitive function and skin homeostasis. Six were isolated and characterized: cis-oleic acid, 1-oleoylglycerol, cerevisterol, a cerebroside, trans-homoaconitic acid and uridine.
Of particular interest was trans-homoaconitic acid, which the researchers reported for the first time as being abundantly accumulated in Tremella.
Together, these discoveries reveal a considerably richer biochemical landscape than the mushroom’s familiar polysaccharide story might suggest.
For the wellness industry, that matters. Clearly characterized phytochemicals create opportunities for greater precision—potentially allowing future extracts to be developed and standardized according to their concentrations of particular functional constituents.

Among the six phytochemicals, cis-oleic acid delivered one of the study’s most impressive results.
In laboratory experiments, it strongly inhibited alpha-glucosidase, recording an IC50 of 0.02 mM. Under the conditions used by the researchers, its inhibitory potency surpassed the positive control acarbose.
Alpha-glucosidase is involved in carbohydrate digestion, making it an important target in research surrounding post-meal glucose metabolism and metabolic wellness.
The researchers also investigated why cis-oleic acid displayed such pronounced activity. Their analysis indicated that its free carboxyl group plays an important role in its interaction with the enzyme.
Intriguingly, they suggested that the concentration of free cis-oleic acid could eventually serve as a quality indicator when developing Tremella-derived functional products aimed at glucose regulation.

Researchers found that it inhibited acetylcholinesterase, or AChE, with an IC50 of 0.29 mM.

According to the scientists, this is the first time tyrosinase-inhibitory activity has been reported for this particular Tremella cerebroside.

Together with the findings involving cis-oleic acid and the cerebroside, the discovery strengthens one of the most compelling themes emerging from the study: Tremella contains structurally diverse phytochemicals capable of interacting with distinctly different biological pathways relevant to healthy-aging research.
Precision Extraction Could Create Premium Tremella Supplements
Perhaps the most commercially exciting element of the study is that these phytochemicals are not merely laboratory curiosities.
Using HPLC analysis, the researchers demonstrated meaningful recovery through relatively mild hydro-alcoholic extraction compatible with functional-food processing.
Different ethanol concentrations also favored the recovery of different constituents, demonstrating that extraction conditions can significantly influence the phytochemical profile of the resulting Tremella preparation.
This has potentially important implications for premium supplements. The future of Tremella supplementation may therefore involve much greater precision than simply placing mushroom powder into capsules.
Advanced manufacturers could eventually select extraction conditions according to the phytochemical profile they wish to emphasize. Standardized extracts might be developed around metabolic wellness, cognitive support, skin-focused beauty nutrition or broader healthy-aging applications.
Such an approach would fit perfectly with the evolution occurring across luxury wellness, where consumers increasingly expect transparency, measurable active constituents and scientifically intelligent formulation.
From “Crown of Fungi” to Modern Longevity Ingredient
Historically revered as the “Crown of Fungi,” Tremella possesses another major advantage: it already has a mature cultivation industry.
The researchers report that Gutian County in Fujian, China, produces more than 450,000 tons annually, representing approximately 90 percent of global supply.
That combination of heritage, scalability and emerging phytochemical science creates an unusually attractive foundation for wellness innovation.
The scientists themselves see considerable potential for transforming Tremella into higher-value functional foods, nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals.
Even more intriguing is their vision for future cultivation. By understanding the biosynthetic pathways responsible for desirable phytochemicals, researchers could potentially help develop elite Tremella cultivars naturally enriched in selected functional constituents.
